What you can do with pulpInbox

Who is it for?

pulpInbox helps anyone who receives a .msg file or needs to dig through an old .pst archive without Outlook at hand: an accountant reviewing a client's correspondence, an assistant recovering a former colleague's mailbox, or someone moving to a new computer. Files are read in the browser, on your device: nothing is sent to a server.

It's also an Outlook alternative for everyday use, if you'd like mail, calendar, contacts and tasks in a single window. To send and receive, you need the mail bridge of your pulpSuite installation, a small server running on your computer or at your host.

Your files

pulpInbox opens .eml, .msg and .emlx messages, .mbox mailboxes, .pst and .ost archives, Google Takeout .zip files, .ics and .vcs calendars and .vcf contacts. It exports to .eml, .mbox, JSON or XML (inside a .zip), calendars to .ics and contacts to .vcf. It doesn't save to .pst, and a .pst file of several GB is read entirely into memory, which can fail on a modest computer. Encrypted messages can't be read.

File types recognised by pulpInbox:

  • .eml
  • .msg
  • .emlx
  • .mbox
  • .pst
  • .ost
  • .ics
  • .vcf

Frequently asked questions

Can I open a .msg file without Outlook?

Yes. Drop the file onto pulpInbox or use Import / export. The text, even when Outlook stored it as RTF, the attachments and attached messages are all shown. An appointment or contact saved as .msg can be added to your calendar or contacts.

Are my files uploaded to the internet?

No. Importing happens in the browser and messages are stored on this device. Only the email accounts you add talk to their server, through your installation's bridge.

Can pulpInbox replace Outlook?

For reading, sorting, replying, scheduling and tracking tasks, yes. Some Outlook features are still missing: accepting or declining invitations, automatic out-of-office replies, .pst export, and two-way sync with Google and Microsoft calendars.

Do I need an account to try it?

No. A demo mailbox opens the first time, and the local mailbox is enough to import and read your archives. You only need an email account to send and receive.

Does it work offline?

Messages already on the device, the local calendar, contacts and tasks remain available. Sending, receiving and online calendars need a connection.
