Several pulpSuite features rely on artificial intelligence models that run on your device, inside the browser. They are downloaded once, when you ask for them, then serve every app in the suite, even offline. The files you work on are not sent anywhere.
The features involved
| App | Features |
|---|---|
| pulpDoc | Dictation on this device (speech to text) |
| pulpPhoto | Background removal, portrait cut-out, fine hair edges, click-to-select object, sky detection, erase and fill, upscaling, photo restoration, deblurring, face restoration, colorization, image description, photo search by description, picking the best photos, grouping faces by person, depth, hair/skin/clothes, facial expressions |
| pulpMotion | Transcription, people cut-out, face and object detection, click-to-select object, depth, erase and fill, hair/skin/clothes |
| pulp3D | Photo to 3D object, depth and camera, object cut-out, body tracking, hand tracking, facial expressions, opening CAD files |
| pulpHome | Reading text in documents, smart document search |
pulpCrew also uses lighter on-device AI features to blur or replace the background of your video (the “Silhouette + depth” method downloads a few dozen extra MB) and to follow your hand on the whiteboard. They come from the pulpSuite server the first time you use them, without a consent window, and don't appear in the panel described below. No image goes to a third party for this processing.
Some features come in several versions (fast, balanced, accurate): the more accurate ones are bigger to download and slower.
Consent before every download
The first time you use one of the features in the table, the Download an AI model? window shows the feature and the download size. Nothing is downloaded without your consent:
- Download: the model comes from the pulpSuite server (never from another site), then stays on your device for every app.
- Cancel: the feature doesn't run. The rest of the app works as usual.
Depending on the feature, a model weighs anything from under a megabyte to a few hundred megabytes. Once downloaded, it is never requested again as long as it stays on the device.
See and remove models
The AI models on this device panel lists each feature with its size and status (On this device or Not downloaded), along with the total space used. You'll find it in the AI settings of pulpPhoto, pulpMotion and pulp3D, in pulpDoc's dictation panel and in pulpHome's settings.
- Download: gets a feature ready in advance, for example before you go somewhere without a network.
- Remove: frees up the space. The model will be downloaded again, with your consent, if you use the feature again.
- Old per-app copies: space taken by old copies each app used to keep for itself, before all apps shared the same ones. Free up deletes them without losing anything.
Good to know
- Speed depends on how powerful your device is, especially its graphics card.
- Downloaded features are kept by the browser. Clearing the site's data, or uninstalling pulpSuite and clearing its data, removes them.
- In private browsing, a downloaded feature is only kept until the window closes.
Features that don't run on the device
A few optional features go through an outside service, and say so where you turn them on: the pulpAssist assistant, dictation and meeting transcripts using the browser's speech engine, text-guided fill in pulpPhoto (on a server you install yourself), and some heavy pulp3D processing (on your own machine, through a local relay). See Privacy.
Frequently asked questions
The download fails with “File not found on the pulpSuite server”.
The models haven't been set up on your installation's server yet. Let your administrator know.
I see “The file arrived incomplete or damaged”.
The connection probably dropped during the download. Try again: pulpSuite checks every file it receives before keeping it.
Are my photos sent away to be analysed?
No. With these models, all the processing happens on your device.
