Install pulpSuite as an app

pulpSuite runs in a browser tab, with nothing to install. In Chrome or Edge (Windows, macOS, Linux, ChromeOS), you can also install it as an app: it then gets its own window, its own shortcuts and lasting access to your files.

What installing gives you

  • A window of its own, with no address bar, and an icon in the Start menu and taskbar.
  • One shortcut per app: right-click the pulpSuite icon in the taskbar, then pick pulpDoc, pulpSheet, pulpSlide…
  • Files opened with a double-click from File Explorer, in the right app.
  • Offline start-up once the suite has loaded.
  • Your work folder remembered from one session to the next, without granting access again (see Work folder).

Firefox and Safari can't install pulpSuite this way. The suite still works in a tab; Open and Save then go through the file picker and your downloads.

Install pulpSuite

  1. Open pulpSuite in Chrome or Edge.
  2. On the home page, click Install pulpSuite at the top right. The button doesn't appear if pulpSuite is already installed or if the browser doesn't offer installation.
  3. Otherwise, use the install icon at the end of the address bar, or the browser menu: ⋮ › Cast, save and share › Install page as app in Chrome, … › Apps › Install this site as an app in Edge.
  4. Confirm. pulpSuite opens in its own window and shows up in your list of apps.

Open your files with a double-click

When it is installed, pulpSuite offers to open these file types:

AppFiles
pulpDoc.docx, .dotx, .docm, .dotm, .doc, .dot, .rtf, .odt, .pulp
pulpSheet.xlsx, .xlsm, .xlsb, .xls, .ods, .csv, .tsv
pulpSlide.pptx, .ppsx, .potx, .ppt, .pps, .pot, .pslide
pulpPlan.pplan, .mpp, .xml, .gan
pulpInbox.eml, .msg, .ics, .vcf
pulpNote.pnote, .md, .enex
pulpPhoto.pphoto, .psd, .psb, .xcf
pulpMotion.pmotion, .aep, .aepx, .mogrt, .lottie
pulp3D.p3d, .blend, .fbx, .glb, .gltf, .usdz, .dae, .3mf, .lwo, .lws, .fcstd, .step, .stp, .iges, .igs, .splat, .spz
pulpCircuit.pcircuit, .kicad_sch, .kicad_pcb
pulpCase.pcase
pulpRobot.probot, .urdf
pulpLab.plab, .ino
pulpBuild.pbuild, .ifc
pulpHome.phome, .ofx, .qif
pulpForge.pforge
pulpProduct.pproduct, .pbom, .passembly
pulpClient.pclient
pulpArchive.parchive

These associations only affect double-clicking in File Explorer. Inside the suite, each app opens more formats (images and RAW files in pulpPhoto, video and audio in pulpMotion…): see each app's help page.

To make a file type always open in pulpSuite on Windows:

  1. In File Explorer, right-click a file (for example budget.xlsx), then choose Open with › Choose another app.
  2. Pick pulpSuite, then Always.
  3. The first time, the browser asks whether pulpSuite may open this type of file: answer Allow. If you refuse three times, the browser stops asking and you need to reinstall pulpSuite.

The file opens in the right app, in the pulpSuite window that is already open if there is one. It is added to your open documents: the document on screen is never replaced (see Open documents and backup copies).

Good to know:

  • .xml is a generic format. pulpSuite reads the start of the file and only opens MS Project plans (in pulpPlan) and Excel 2003 workbooks (in pulpSheet). For other XML files, keep your usual editor as the default app.
  • .mpp, the binary MS Project format, is recognised but not read yet: pulpPlan explains how to save it as XML from Project.
  • If you open several files at once, only the first one is opened; a message asks you to open the others one at a time.

Working offline

When installed, pulpSuite keeps the home page and all the apps on your device, so it starts even without a network. Large items (on-device AI features, spelling dictionaries, meeting backgrounds) are only downloaded the first time you use them, with your agreement for AI features (see AI models).

Offline, everything that works on your device keeps working. What needs the network stops: mail and connected calendars, pulpCrew meetings, the pulpAssist assistant, and the first download of an AI feature.

Updates

pulpSuite updates itself in the background. When a new version is ready, a banner shows A new version is available — Reload. Nothing reloads until you click: save your work, then click Reload, or Later (the new version is used the next time you open pulpSuite).

Uninstall

  • From the pulpSuite window: the ⋮ (or …) menu at the top right, then Uninstall pulpSuite.
  • On Windows: Settings › Apps › Installed apps, pulpSuite, Uninstall.
  • In the browser: chrome://apps (Chrome) or edge://apps (Edge), right-click pulpSuite, Remove.

If you also choose to clear the data, everything pulpSuite keeps in the browser is deleted (backup copies, notes, imported mail, downloaded AI features). Files on your disk are never touched. File associations go away with the app.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to install pulpSuite to use it?

No. Every app works in a tab. Installing adds the separate window, double-click opening and lasting access to your work folder.

The “Install pulpSuite” button doesn't show up. Why?

pulpSuite may already be installed, or your browser doesn't offer installation (Firefox, Safari). In Chrome or Edge, try the icon at the end of the address bar.

A file opened from File Explorer says “pulpSuite can't open this file”.

Its extension isn't linked to any app in the suite, or it is an .xml file that is neither an MS Project plan nor an Excel 2003 workbook.
