In pulpSuite, every app can keep several documents open at the same time. Opening a file or creating a document adds a document: the one on screen is never replaced without telling you. While you work, a backup copy is kept automatically so you can pick up where you left off after an unexpected shutdown.
To share a file with a team through a synchronized folder (available in pulpClient, pulpForge, pulpProduct, pulpArchive, pulpHome, pulpBuild, pulpSheet, pulpPlan and pulpSlide), see Sharing a file.
The status of each document
A dot (green, amber or red) and a short label show where each document stands:
| Label | What it means |
|---|---|
| Saved to disk | The document is in your file, exactly as you see it. |
| Modified — not yet saved to disk | Your file exists, but the latest changes aren't in it yet. |
| Not saved to disk — may be lost | The document only exists in the browser. Save it (Ctrl+S). |
| New — nothing to lose | A blank document with no changes yet. |
| Opened from “…”, unchanged | A file in another format, read without changes. |
| Kept in this browser | The app stores its own items in the browser (its library). |
As long as the document on screen only exists in the browser, a red Not saved to disk badge stays visible in the app's toolbar, with a Save button. The first time, a bubble explains why: browser data can be wiped at any time (cleanup, private browsing, low disk space).
The document bar and the “Open documents” panel
The bar at the top of each app shows the document on screen; its menu lists the other documents open in that app, with a button to create one (New document) and a cross to close each.
Press Ctrl+Shift+O (or Alt with the key just below Esc) in any app to see every document open in the suite, across all apps. During a pulpCrew meeting, Ctrl+Shift+O turns the camera off or on instead: use Alt with the key below Esc.
- Click a document to show it in its app.
- Search for a document by name.
- Close a document with the cross.
- At the top of the panel: how many documents are open, and how many aren't saved to disk.
- Under each modified document: the time of its latest backup copy.
At the bottom of the panel, you can see how much browser storage is used and whether that storage is protected from automatic cleanup. When space runs low, a warning asks you to save your documents to disk. Backup or saved? recalls the difference between the two.
Backup copies
pulpSuite keeps two kinds of backup copies:
- In the browser, a few seconds after each change, for every modified document. These copies never leave your device.
- In your work folder, if you have chosen one: a copy of the document on screen, in the
.pulpdesk-secourssubfolder, about once a minute while you work. It never takes the place of your files. Turn it on or off at the bottom of the “Open documents” panel (it is on by default).
A backup copy goes away once the document is saved or closed.
Recover your documents after a crash
If the browser, the computer or pulpSuite shuts down while some documents aren't saved to disk, the Document recovery window appears the next time you start. Their latest backup copy has been restored:
- Check each document with the Open button.
- Keep them all with Keep all, or remove the ones you no longer need with Discard.
- Save them to disk.
Reloading the page also brings back the documents of that tab.
Closing a document
When you close a modified document, pulpSuite asks: Save, Don't save or Cancel. If the document has never been saved to disk, the window warns you that it will be lost.
Limitations
- When browser storage is full, the backup copy fails and the panel says so.
- The backup copy in the work folder is only written when access to the folder is granted (see Work folder).
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between “saved” and “backup”?
“Saved”: the document is in your file, on disk. “Backup”: an automatic copy kept by the browser (and in .pulpdesk-secours when the option is on), used to recover the document after an incident.
I opened a file and my previous document disappeared.
It's still open. Press Ctrl+Shift+O to see all your documents and switch between them.
Can I delete the .pulpdesk-secours folder?
Yes, when no document is being edited. pulpSuite creates it again when needed.
